Wrexham player James McClean has revealed that he punched a Cardiff City supporter prior to their recent Carabao Cup match, asserting that he acted out of self-defense. The former Premier League winger found himself in a heated exchange with rival fans before the fourth-round game at the Racecourse Ground, which took place on October 28, where Cardiff triumphed 2-1.
In a statement shared with talkSPORT, McClean described the incident that unfolded when he arrived at the stadium in his vehicle. He stated that he was confronted by four Cardiff fans outside the players’ parking area and faced verbal abuse from them before one individual approached him aggressively.
The 36-year-old recounted that he struck one of the fans before entering the stadium. A representative from Wrexham confirmed that the episode was reported to relevant authorities; however, North Wales Police are reportedly not pursuing an investigation at this time.
McClean’s comments were shared publicly by presenter Jim White, as he reached out for clarification on the matter. In his text, McClean detailed how he was accosted after exiting his car. He noted that the group of fans, likely in their late 20s to early 30s, recognized him and erupted with insults. Initially ignoring their comments, he eventually confronted them when the verbal attacks escalated.
In his message, he stated, “Words were exchanged. One of them, a tall guy with glasses, made an aggressive motion towards me. As I’ve said in previous discussions, I expect not to feel threatened at my place of work. Therefore, I took action before he could.”
He further emphasized the need for understanding that athletes are not exempt from the consequences of others’ actions, stating, “Just because we play football doesn’t mean people can act without considering the repercussions.”
Following the incident, McClean remained on the bench during Wrexham’s loss to Cardiff, which eliminated them from the Carabao Cup. A Wrexham spokesperson acknowledged awareness of the situation involving a first-team player and a visiting supporter, mentioning that they had reported it to the appropriate authorities but would not comment further at this time.
Cardiff City advanced to the quarter-finals following their victory and is set to face Premier League giants Chelsea, with the match scheduled for mid-December.
